Wind (2019)

Wind (2019) is a recent American short film, both written and directed by Edwin Chang. Produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film follows the story of Ellis and his Grandmother. The two live in a mysterious sink-hole filled with floating rocks and debris from discarded objects and machinery. Despite their challenging living conditions, they have managed to build a small home out of the trash and sustain themselves on potatoes – the only crop that grows in their environment. Each day, Grandma tasks Ellis with floating out attached to a cord to gather useful items for their survival. Their ultimate goal is to build a rocket that will take them out of the hole and into the bright light at the top. However, one day, Ellis stumbles upon an abandoned plane among the wreckage but quickly realizes it can only accommodate one person.

Upon Grandma’s suggestion, they decide to have him pilot the plane out of the hole while using the cord to lift her up. After adding some final touches to their rocket, Ellis climbs in and begins his journey upward. As he carefully navigates past rocks and debris, he encounters a bit of turbulence, but manages to make it through and land in a lush field. Surrounded by flying birds, he reaches for the cord and spends nearly an entire day pulling it up. Much to his surprise, instead of seeing Grandma at the other end, he finds a box of potatoes. Overcome with emotion, he embraces the box gratefully, recognizing her sacrifice for him.
