The film Winter’s Tale (2014), adapted from Mark Helprin’s novel of the same name, tells the story of a young immigrant couple in 1895. Unfortunately, they are denied entry into Manhattan due to their consumption (Tuberculosis). Unable to bring their infant son with them, they are forced to return to their ship, City of Justice. In a desperate act, they place their baby inside a model of the ship and watch him float to shore in New York City. Twenty-one years later, the boy has been raised as a thief by a supernatural demon posing as a gangster named Pearly Soames. When Peter decides to leave Pearly’s gang, he is marked for death and must be rescued by a mysterious white horse with wings – his guardian angel.
Peter plans to move to Florida for the summer but the horse convinces him to steal from one final mansion. This particular mansion belongs to Beverly Penn, a young woman suffering from consumption. Due to her high fever, she is forced to sleep outside in a tent during the winter. While her father Isaac and sister Willa are away, Beverly catches Peter attempting to rob the house. After Peter confesses that he no longer desires a life of crime, Beverly kindly offers him a cup of tea. As they share their personal stories, they fall deeply in love. However, Pearly sends his men to attack Beverly’s home because he believes it is Peter’s ‘miracle’ and ultimate destiny, and he hopes to destroy Peter by preventing it from happening.
