Set in Ireland during 1650, the townspeople of Kilkenny are ordered by the authoritarian Lord Protector to clear the woods near their town, resulting in tension with a wolf pack. Bill Goodfellowe, an English hunter, has been summoned to Kilkenny with his daughter Robyn to eliminate the wolves. In a bid to help her father, Robyn secretly follows him out of town with her pet falcon, Merlyn. Accidently shooting Merlyn while trying to kill a wolf causes Robyn to track down a mysterious girl who takes her into the forest. To her surprise, she finds Merlyn healed and follows him as they encounter a young wolf. Startled into a trap by the sight of Robyn fighting it off, she is bitten by the wolf.
Merlyn and the wolf guide Robyn to the wolves’ den, where she is surprised to find that the wolf is actually Mebh, the girl she met earlier. Mebh reveals herself as a “Wolfwalker”, able to transform into a wolf in her dreams. As they grow closer, Robyn discovers that Mebh’s mother Moll has yet to return from her quest for a new home for their pack. Despite Robyn’s attempts to explain the existence of Wolfwalkers to Bill, he scolds her for venturing into the forest. The next day, while working in the scullery as ordered by the Lord Protector, Robyn hears an alluring voice from a hidden cage in his chambers, but is quickly shooed away by the head maid. That night, as she sleeps, Robyn finds that her spirit has left her body and taken on the form of a wolf once again.
