Wonder (2017)
Wonder (2017) is an American family drama directed by Stephen Chbosky, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Conrad and Jack Thorne. Based on the novel by R. J. Palacio, it follows August ‘Auggie’ Pullman, a 10-year-old boy living in Brooklyn with his parents, older sister Via, and their dog Daisy. Auggie was born with a rare facial deformity called ‘mandibulofacial dysostosis’ and has undergone multiple surgeries to help him function. Due to his condition, he wears an astronaut helmet when out in public. After being homeschooled by his mother Isabel for most of his life, Auggie’s parents decide to enroll him in Beecher Prep for fifth grade. Despite facing ostracism at first, Auggie eventually forms a close bond with his classmate Jack Will. On Halloween, Auggie decides to dress up in a Ghostface mask and cloak after Daisy accidentally ruins the Boba Fett costume he initially planned to wear from the previous year.
Auggie strolls through the halls of school, feeling upbeat and self-assured thanks to his mask that grants him anonymity. However, upon entering his homeroom, he overhears Jack – who doesn’t recognize him – joining forces with Julian Albans and his clique, the same group who had ostracized Auggie in the past. They are making fun of him behind his back, even going as far as to say they would rather die than look like Auggie. This deeply upsets Auggie, causing him to pretend to be sick and prompting Isabel to cut her mother-daughter day short in order to take Auggie home. Despite her own hurt feelings from being rejected by her best friend Miranda, Via convinces Auggie to go trick-or-treating with her. During their outing, Auggie strikes up a new friendship with Summer Dawson who helps him through his challenges and shares her own struggles with him, including the recent fallout with Jack.
