However, her husband Walter is also involved in their professional lives as chairman of the English department where Grady teaches. Recently, Grady’s third wife Emily has left him and he struggles to replicate the success of his first novel. Hannah, a tenant in Grady’s spacious home, is attracted to him, but he does not feel the same. James is enigmatic and enjoys writing fiction, despite his initial reservations. At a party held at the Gaskells’ residence, Sara confides in Grady that she is carrying his child. As they chat outside, James reveals that he possesses what he claims to be a replica gun from his mother’s fairground days. However, it turns out to be a real gun when James shoots the Gaskells’ dog while trying to protect Grady from its attack. Adding to Grady’s troubles, James steals a valuable piece of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia from the household. With Sara pressuring him to choose between her and Emily, Grady is unable to tell her about the chaotic events that unfolded during the party.
