Wonder Wheel (2017) is an American period drama written and directed by Woody Allen. The story is narrated by Mickey Rubin, a Coney Island life guard who dreams of becoming a playwright like Eugene O’Neill. When Carolina, the daughter of Humpty Rannell, arrives at the boardwalk looking for Ginny Rannell, her father’s second wife and a waitress at the clam shack, she pleads with her to let her stay. However, Ginny defers the decision to Humpty. He had kicked her out when she married her mobster boyfriend Frank and gave up her college education and hopes for a better future. Carolina reveals that she is running from Frank, who she believes wants to harm her because she gave evidence of his illegal activities to the FBI.

Humpty agrees to let her stay on one condition – that she saves enough money to go back to college and improve her life. Ginny helps Carolina secure a waitress position at her place of work in Coney Island during the 1950s. After speaking to the FBI, Carolina flees from her husband, who is involved with the mob. She seeks refuge with her father Humpty and his new wife Ginny, along with Ginny’s son Richie. Despite having a falling out five years prior, Carolina and her father slowly reconcile. However, this causes some initial tension between them. Unbeknownst to Ginny, she is having an affair with a younger lifeguard named Mickey. Unfortunately, Mickey also has feelings for Carolina, causing Ginny to try and prevent losing him. In the midst of all this drama, the mob are still on the hunt for Carolina.
