In 2017, Todd Haynes brought to life Wonderstruck (2017), an American mystery drama adapted from Brian Selznick’s 2011 novel of the same title. Christine Vachon produced the film under her Killer Films banner and had enlisted Haynes as director by May 2015. As someone who typically works on period pieces, Haynes found the double-period concept of Wonderstruck, set in both the 1920s and 1970s, particularly intriguing. He also saw it as a classic mystery that would challenge viewers to uncover the connection between two parallel stories. Beyond that, he hoped to create a film that could be enjoyed by both children and adults alike.

The movie weaves together two narratives, each taking place half a century apart. The older story is captured in a classic black-and-white style. Both stories center around the journey of a child. In 1927, Rose, a young girl who is deaf, escapes from her father’s home in New Jersey to seek out her mother and role model, Lillian Mayhew, an actress. In 1977, Ben, who has recently lost his parents and become deaf due to an unfortunate accident, runs away from his home in Minnesota in search of his father.
