Wonka (2023)

Directed by Paul King, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby based on a story by King, Wonka (2023) is a musical fantasy film. It delves into the early life of Willy Wonka, the beloved character from Roald Dahl’s classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. As an aspiring magician, inventor, and chocolatier, Wonka arrives in Europe to set up shop at Galéries Gourmet. However, facing financial struggles, he is persuaded to stay at Mrs. Scrubitt’s boardinghouse by her henchman Bleacher. Despite orphan Noodle’s warning about the fine print, Wonka signs a contract that he cannot read. To pay off his debts, he introduces ‘hoverchocs’ – chocolates that make people fly – but faces opposition from three rival chocolatiers who call upon the Chief of Police to confiscate his earnings for disrupting trade and selling without a proper store. With no means to pay off the exorbitant fees demanded by the contract, Wonka ends up captured and forced to work in a launderette alongside five other prisoners, including Noodle.
Upon learning of a scheming plan by the ‘Chocolate Cartel’ involving rival chocolatiers, he seeks assistance from Noodle to make his escape. In exchange for her help, he promises Noodle a lifetime supply of chocolates while she vows to teach him how to read. Exploiting the Chief’s love for chocolate, the Cartel attempts to coerce Wonka into leaving town. Wonka reveals to Noodle that his deep-rooted love for chocolate is connected to his late mother. He also mentions the ongoing issue of an unknown orange man stealing his chocolates for years. Seeking ingredients for his renowned chocolate, Wonka and Noodle venture to the nearby zoo and successfully milk Abigail the giraffe. As they navigate through passageways under the city to evade Scrubitt and the Chief, they team up with other laundry workers on a mission to sell their delicious treats and pay off their debts.
