World Trade Center (2006)
The American docudrama disaster film, World Trade Center (2006), was directed by Oliver Stone and written by Andrea Berloff. It portrays the harrowing experience of a team of New York City police officers during the September 11 attacks, when they became trapped in the rubble of the collapsed World Trade Center. Dispatched to Downtown Manhattan on that fateful day, members of the Port Authority Police received news en route that both towers had been hit by planes. Led by Sergeant John McLoughlin, a veteran of the 1993 bombing, a group of volunteers including officers Antonio Rodrigues, Will Jimeno, and Dominick Pezzulo were tasked with retrieving rescue equipment from Building 5. Their team was later joined by Officer Christopher Amoroso.
As the five officers head towards the North Tower, the South Tower crumbles above them. McLoughlin realizes their only chance of survival is to seek shelter in the elevator shaft. Despite their efforts, only McLoughlin, Jimeno, and Pezzulo make it out alive but are trapped underneath the debris. Unfortunately, Pezzulo is unable to free Jimeno as his lower half is pinned. As they wait for rescue, McLoughlin can hear the North Tower collapsing above them. Tragically, Pezzulo succumbs to his injuries from a falling concrete slab but not before firing his sidearm in hopes of alerting rescuers. In the midst of their terrifying ordeal, Jimeno and McLoughlin share stories about their lives.
