As a teenager during the American Civil War, Wyatt lived on his family’s farm in Pella, Iowa while his older brothers served in the Union Army. He attempted to join them by lying about his age but was caught by his father. After the war, his brothers returned home with James being severely injured. The family then relocated out west. One day, Wyatt witnessed a man being killed in a duel and became sick at the sight. Years later, he worked as a wagon driver and referee for boxing matches to make extra money. During one drunken argument, he disarmed a bully who had tried to shoot him. Eventually, he returned to Missouri where he married his childhood sweetheart, Urilla Sutherland.
Upon moving into their new house, he begins his job as a lawman. Sadly, after several months, his wife passes away due to typhoid fever while pregnant. During her illness, Wyatt stays by her side, but her death takes a toll on him and he falls into a deep depression. Burning down their home and belongings, he turns to drinking and wanders from town to town until he eventually ends up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Desperate for money, he resorts to robbery and steals a horse but is quickly caught and put in jail. Thanks to the help of his father who pays his bail, Wyatt is released but warned never to return to Arkansas. He then becomes a buffalo hunter and meets Bat Masterson and his brother Ed Masterson. As the years go by, Wyatt becomes a deputy marshal in Wichita, Kansas where he gains a reputation for enforcing the law without fear.
