Year of the Dragon (1985)
Year of the Dragon (1985) is an American neo-noir crime thriller film co-written and directed by Michael Cimino. It follows the story of Stanley White, a highly decorated police captain and Vietnam War veteran who is assigned to New York City’s Chinatown. Desperate to rid the city of Chinese organized crime, White becomes fixated on taking down Joey Tai, a young man who relentlessly climbs the ranks of the Triads. As their rivalry intensifies, they unravel the fragile peace that has long existed between the Triads and the local police precinct. Meanwhile, other criminal groups such as the Italian Mob and Thai gangsters are also dragged into this epic power struggle over control of the heroin supply chain.
Despite his dedication to his job, White’s single-minded pursuit leaves his marriage with Connie neglected. Not only does the married captain become involved with a reporter named Tracy Tzu, who is violently targeted by the criminals, but his wife also suffers at their hands. This only strengthens his resolve to take down the triads, specifically Joey Tai. To aid in his mission, White enlists a promising rookie cop named Herbert to infiltrate Tai’s restaurant as an undercover worker. Despite gathering valuable intel on a drug shipment, Herbert meets his demise when he is betrayed and revealed as a cop by fellow officer Alan Perez. With both his wife and Herbert now gone, White wastes no time confronting Tai as he receives the shipment.
