Yellowstone (2018–2024), an American neo-Western drama TV show created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, first aired on June 20, 2018, on Paramount Network. The series centers on the Dutton family, headed by John Dutton, who commands the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. The family constantly faces attacks from neighboring land developers, an Indian reservation, and America’s first National Park. It delves deeply into the violent reality of a world hidden from the media’s gaze – one where developers profit immensely from land grabs, and politicians are easily swayed by powerful oil and logging companies. In this frontierland, poisoned drinking water from fracking operations and unsolved murders go unnoticed as they have become a part of everyday life. Through the lens of this family that epitomizes both the best and worst of America, viewers get a glimpse of a country in all its complexities.
In 2013, Sheridan began working on a new series after growing tired of acting and switching to screenwriting. Drawing from his experiences living in rural areas like Texas and Wyoming, he chose to set the series in Montana, specifically in Livingston. Initially pitched to HBO, the network ultimately passed on the project. However, in May 2017, Paramount Network announced that they had greenlit their first scripted series – Yellowstone. The show was given a full season order of ten episodes and would be written, directed, and executive-produced by Sheridan himself. The first part of the fifth and final season premiered on November 13, 2022, with the second part scheduled for November 2024.
