Yes Man (2008)
Directed by Peyton Reed, Yes Man (2008) is an American romantic comedy film about Carl Allen, a bank loan officer. Since his divorce from Stephanie, Carl has become introverted and has a negative outlook on life. He often ignores his friends Peter and Rooney, even missing their engagement party. In a dream, he envisions his own death and realizes that Peter and Rooney wouldn’t be affected by it. Upon the suggestion of Nick, an old colleague who had previously broken a bank window with a rock, Carl attends a motivational seminar where he learns to say ‘yes’ to every opportunity. There, he meets Terrence, an inspirational guru who encourages him to make a ‘covenant with the universe’ and accept everything that comes his way. Acting on this advice, Carl agrees to help a homeless man and ends up stranded in Elysian Park with no gas or phone battery.
Feeling disillusioned, he ventures to a nearby gas station and meets Allison, an unconventional young woman. She kindly offers him a ride back to his car on her scooter and shares a kiss before parting ways. A few days later, his elderly neighbor Tillie propositions him for sex in exchange for help putting up shelves. Though he initially declines, he eventually changes his mind after experiencing a string of bad luck. From then on, Carl adopts a ‘say yes’ attitude and starts taking advantage of various opportunities that come his way. This leads him to reconnect with old friends Peter and Rooney, develop a bond with his nerdy boss Norman, assist Peter’s fiancée Lucy with her bridal shower, and even learn new skills like spoken Korean, guitar playing, and flying airplanes.
