Yesterday (2019) is a romantic comedy musical directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis, based on a story by Jack Barth and Curtis. The film follows the journey of Jack Malik, a struggling singer-songwriter from Lowestoft who plays small shows. His childhood friend and manager, Ellie Appleton, encourages him to keep pursuing his dreams. During a rare power outage that lasted only twelve seconds, Jack is struck by a bus. After his recovery, he surprises his friends with a rendition of The Beatles’ ‘Yesterday’, only to realize they have never heard of the iconic band. A quick search on the internet reveals that the group never even existed in this world, leaving Jack in disbelief. He decides to start performing Beatles’ songs as his own and gains popularity. With the help of Ellie, Jack records a demo with local music producer Gavin and eventually lands a performance on television. This earns him an invitation from famous pop star Ed Sheeran to open for him during their concert in Moscow.

Ellie, a math teacher who has parent-teacher conferences planned, declines to accompany Jack. As a result, his roadie friend Rocky joins him on the trip instead. Following the performance, Sheeran challenges Jack to a songwriting competition. After playing ‘The Long and Winding Road’, Sheeran humbly accepts defeat. In Los Angeles, Jack is signed to Debra Hammer’s label and rapidly rises to fame under her guidance. At Jack’s farewell party before his move to LA, Ellie confesses her long-standing love for him. Once in EastWest Studios, Jack struggles to recall the lyrics for ‘Eleanor Rigby’. In an attempt to jog his memory, he visits significant locations in the Beatles’ hometown of Liverpool including Strawberry Field, Penny Lane, and Eleanor Rigby’s grave.
