You Won't Be Alone (2022)
You Won’t Be Alone (2022) is a horror dark fantasy drama film written and directed by Goran Stolevski. It is an international co-production of Australia, the United Kingdom, and Serbia featuring Macedonian language, and marks Stolevski’s directorial debut. Set in 19th-century Macedonia, the story follows Maria, a “Wolf-Eateress” or witch with a disfigured appearance. When she enters the home of a newborn baby girl, the child’s mother makes a deal for her daughter’s life at the cost of surrendering her when she turns 16. As promised, Maria takes away the girl’s voice before leaving. Fearing for her daughter’s safety, the mother hides Nevena in a cave where she grows up knowing nothing of the outside world.
On Nevena’s 16th birthday, Maria arrives in the form of an eagle. After chasing the bird away and killing her, Maria takes on a new form and rescues Nevena from the cave. As a witch, Maria possesses the power to bestow witchcraft onto others through a single spell that can only be used once in a lifetime. Maria uses this power by sacrificing a donkey and using its blood to mark Nevena’s chest before burning it with fire. This transformation grants Nevena deadly black talons on her fingers and palm. Maria then pulls out Nevena’s mother’s guts, returning her to her previous burned form. Despite Maria’s attempts to teach Nevena how to catch and consume animals for power, the young witch refuses to obey and instead chooses to play with them. This angers Maria and she eventually leaves Nevena alone to fend for herself, warning her that humans may harm her. However, Nevena continues to reject the idea of consuming blood for power, causing disappointment and anger towards Maria who ultimately abandons her.
