Young Adult (2011)
The American comedy-drama film, Young Adult (2011), was directed by Jason Reitman, written by Diablo Cody, and starred Charlize Theron. Mavis Gary, a 37-year-old alcoholic ghost writer of young adult novels, was facing a tight deadline from her editor to finish the final book of the series before it was canceled. In the midst of this pressure, Mavis received an email containing a photo of her high school ex-boyfriend Buddy Slade’s newborn daughter with his wife Beth. This picture triggered something in Mavis and she believed it was a sign that she and Buddy were destined to be together. With this in mind, Mavis headed back to Mercury, Minnesota (her hometown) under the guise of overseeing a real estate deal. Upon arrival and after listening to ‘The Concept’ by Teenage Fanclub from an old mixtape Buddy had given her in high school, Mavis arranged to meet him at a local sports bar the following day for old times’ sake.
Prior to the event, she heads solo to Woody’s, a local bar. There she encounters Matt Freehauf, a former classmate who she vaguely recalls. Matt was left disabled after being attacked by bullies who mistakenly assumed he was gay. Despite his warning that her plan to win back Buddy is both illogical and self-centered, she pays no heed. The next day, Mavis meets Buddy at a sports bar where they bump into Matt once again, as he works there as the bookkeeper. On their way out, Buddy invites her to watch Beth’s “mom rock band” perform. Mavis spends yet another night getting intoxicated with Matt, who makes his own bourbon in the garage that he shares with his sister Sandra.
