Young Doctors in Love (1982)
Young Doctors in Love (1982) is an American comedy film directed by Garry Marshall. The story follows a group of eight young medical interns who join the City Hospital surgery staff, headed by the brash and cynical Dr. Prang. Among the patients at the hospital is Sal Bonafetti, an old mafioso who has disguised himself under a different name due to fear of retaliation from rival crime organizations. His son Angelo takes on the identity of a woman named ‘Angela’ to keep watch over his father. In addition, professional hitman Malamud also becomes a patient in order to carry out an assassination attempt on Sal. However, despite his efforts, Malamud’s plans continuously fall apart, resulting in him undergoing unnecessary and painful treatments.
The regular check-ins with Sal and Angela are usually done by resident Dr. Walter Rist, who unknowingly develops feelings for Sal’s son in disguise over time. As the film progresses, residents Dr. Stephanie Brody and Dr. Simon August begin a relationship. During their dinner outing, Stephanie experiences a sharp pain in her side but brushes it off as nothing. In the midst of working two other jobs to support his residency, half-asleep Dr. Phil Burns receives a dirty note from head Nurse Norine Sprockett which he mistakes as a flirtation from a patient. When he makes a move on her, Norine responds with a slap. As an apology, Phil shows her the fox step, revealing his second job as a dance instructor.
