Youth (2015) is a comedy-drama film by writer and director Paolo Sorrentino. This marks his second English-language work. The story follows septuagenarian friends Fred Ballinger and Mick Boyle, who are currently vacationing at a luxurious spa in the Swiss Alps called Wiesen. Fred, a retired classical music composer, is approached by a representative for Queen Elizabeth II during their stay. The Queen wishes to grant him a knighthood and invites him to perform his popular composition ‘Simple Song #3’ at Prince Philip’s birthday concert. However, Fred declines the offer, stating that he has no interest in performing anymore. Despite this, he still finds solace in composing pieces in his mind when he’s alone. Meanwhile, Mick, a film director, is collaborating with a team of writers on the screenplay for what he considers to be his ‘testament’ film. Along with them is actor Jimmy Tree, who is frustrated with being remembered only for his role as a robot and is currently researching for an upcoming part.

Among the eccentric crowd inhabiting the hotel are a youthful masseuse, a hefty Diego Maradona, and Miss Universe. Fred and Mick find themselves reflecting on their lives, acknowledging that their memories are fading and their future prospects appear bleak. Lena, who also happens to be Fred’s daughter and assistant, is married to Mick’s son. However, things take a turn when he leaves her for pop sensation Paloma Faith. As Lena seeks solace at the resort, she unleashes her pent-up frustration towards her father, who was always emotionally distant during her upbringing. Just as emotions reach a breaking point, the emissary makes a return visit. Lena breaks down in tears as Fred reveals his decision not to perform ‘Simple Song #3’, explaining that the soprano segment belongs solely to his wife who can no longer sing it.
