Youth Without Youth (2007)
Francis Ford Coppola wrote, produced, and directed Youth Without Youth (2007), a fantasy drama based on Mircea Eliade’s novella of the same name. The film follows Dominic Matei, a 70-year-old linguistics professor who is still longing for his lost love, Laura. He decides to revisit Bucharest, where they first met in university. Feeling like his quest for the origins of human language has been futile and solitary, Dominic plans to end his life after this final trip. However, as he crosses the street, he suddenly gets struck by lightning but miraculously survives. At the hospital, Professor Stanciulescu reveals that the lightning appears to have rejuvenated him into a much younger man. During his stay at the Professor’s house, Dominic also discovers that he now possesses strange psychic abilities.
As Nazi Germany invades Romania, Doktor Josef Rudolf takes an interest in Stanciulescu’s miraculous patient. Due to Dominic’s emerging abilities, his sense of reality becomes distorted and he mistakes the enigmatic Woman in Room Six for a seductive fantasy. They spend their nights together and she discovers that Dominic has developed the gift of speaking in tongues. Meanwhile, beyond human perception, an alternate persona manifests itself to Dominic as his ‘Other’ from outside space and time. When Dominic expresses doubt, the ‘Other’ produces two roses out of thin air as proof. Unbeknownst to Dominic, Stanciulescu witnesses this exchange and overhears his friend ask himself where to place a third rose. Realizing the true intentions of the Nazis, Stanciulescu convinces Dominic to flee Romania.
