Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008)
The American comedy film, Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008), was written, directed and edited by Kevin Smith. The two protagonists, Zack Brown and Miriam ‘Miri’ Linky, have been best friends since the first grade and live together in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. Despite their jobs at the local mall and coffee shop, they struggle to pay their utility bills, leading to their water being shut off the night before Thanksgiving. At their high school reunion, Miri tries to seduce her former classmate Bobby Long while Zack chats with Brandon St. Randy, a porn star who happens to be Bobby’s boyfriend. When they return home from the reunion, they find that their electricity has also been cut off. After seeing a viral video of Miri changing into unflattering underwear at Zack’s workplace during the reunion (thanks to some teenage boys), and noticing the growing acceptance of porn culture in mainstream media, Zack convinces Miri that they should make a porno together to earn some much-needed cash.
A group of acquaintances and hired help come together to create a Star Wars parody, titled Star Whores. Delaney, the film’s producer and Zack’s co-worker, secures film equipment and a building to serve as their studio. However, upon returning to the studio after their first night of filming, they discover that the building is being demolished, along with all their equipment and costumes. The person who rented it out has disappeared with their money. Fortunately, while working at a coffee shop later on, Zack remembers that his boss had mentioned installing a hidden camera. He discovers it and suggests using it to replace their lost equipment. With this new plan in place, Zack transforms the film to be set in the coffee shop, giving it a new coffee shop motif. The group then proceeds to shoot the film after hours.
