Zodiac (2007) is an American neo-noir crime thriller film directed by David Fincher and written by James Vanderbilt, based on the nonfiction books by Robert Graysmith: Zodiac (1986) and Zodiac Unmasked (2002). The movie opens on July 4, 1969, when an unknown man attacks Darlene Ferrin and Mike Mageau with a handgun at a lovers’ lane in Vallejo, California. Only Mike survives. A month later, the San Francisco Chronicle receives encrypted letters from the killer who calls himself ‘Zodiac’. In these letters, he threatens to kill twelve people unless the newspaper publishes his identity, which he has hidden in a coded message. Despite correctly guessing that the message does not contain his true identity, political cartoonist Robert Graysmith is dismissed by crime reporter Paul Avery and the editors and is not involved in the initial investigation.
However, when a married couple cracks one of the codes published by the newspaper, Graysmith becomes determined to solve the case. In September of that year, the killer strikes again, stabbing law student Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard at Lake Berryessa in Napa County; sadly, Cecelia passes away two days later. At the workplace, Avery mocks Graysmith prior to their conversation about the encrypted letters. Graysmith deciphers the letter, which proves useful to Avery, prompting him to open up and exchange information. One of Graysmith’s observations about the letters is that Zodiac’s mention of humans as ‘the most dangerous animal of them all’ is a nod to the movie The Most Dangerous Game, featuring Count Zaroff, a villain who hunts human beings for sport. A fortnight later, Paul Stine, a taxi driver in San Francisco, is fatally shot in the Presidio Heights neighborhood.
