Backcountry (2014)
Backcountry (2014) is a Canadian nature-survival horror film, written and directed by Adam MacDonald as his debut feature film. It is loosely based on the real-life story of Mark Jordan and Jacqueline Perry, who were attacked by a black bear while camping in Missinaibi Lake Provincial Park, located north of Chapleau, Ontario in 2005. For his bravery during the incident, Mark received the Star of Courage award from Governor General Michaëlle Jean. The movie follows Alex and his girlfriend Jenny as they arrive at a provincial park for a weekend camping trip. Excited to explore a trail he loved as a child, Alex declines a map offered by the park ranger, confident in his knowledge of the area. However, their peaceful trip takes an unexpected turn when they encounter an Irish tour guide named Brad on their first night.
Despite Jenny’s friendly invitation for dinner, Brad’s advances on her quickly irritate Alex and lead to a confrontation between the two men before Brad eventually leaves. The next day, Alex ventures off the designated path and into the park’s interior, where he recalls a lake with a cascading waterfall. While en route, he spots a bear’s paw imprint on the ground but chooses not to inform Jenn. They also come across a partially consumed deer carcass. Once they reach what Alex believes is the lake, they discover it isn’t there and realize they are lost. In a state of panic, Jenn searches for her phone to call for assistance, but Alex confesses he deliberately left it in their vehicle because he was worried she would be too preoccupied with it during their weekend getaway. This revelation sparks a heated argument between the two, during which Jenn admits she never wanted to go hiking and Alex discloses his intention of proposing to her.
