In Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1997), an animated superhero film and the second based on Batman: The Animated Series, the story unfolds between the end of the show and the start of The New Batman Adventures. After his last encounter with Batman, Victor Fries has taken up residence in an Arctic cave with his newly adopted Inuit son, Koonak, and polar bears Notchka and Shaka. While Fries continues to search for a cure for his wife Nora’s illness, she remains in her cryogenic chamber. However, when a research submarine accidentally shatters Nora’s containment vessel, she begins to deteriorate rapidly. Fueled by desperation to save his wife, Fries freezes the submarine crew and returns to Gotham City. He turns to his old colleague Dr. Gregory Belson for help finding a cure. Belson determines that an organ transplant is Nora’s only hope, but with her rare blood type there are no suitable donors available. Refusing to give up on Nora’s life, Fries makes a controversial decision – they will use a live donor, even if it means taking an innocent life. His tempting offer of gold convinces Belson to assist him despite his moral reservations and financial struggles.
Upon discovering that Barbara Gordon, also known as Batgirl, is a suitable donor, Fries abducts her during a date with Dick Grayson, known as Robin. She is held captive on an abandoned oil platform by Fries and Belson, who deceive her into thinking she is needed for a blood transfusion to save Nora. Reluctantly, Barbara agrees to assist them. In Gotham, Batman and Robin investigate her disappearance and trace it back to Belson’s involvement. They uncover Belson’s financial struggles through his broker, Dean Arbagast. While on the phone with Arbagast from the oil rig, Belson inadvertently reveals their location when a passing ship sounds its horn. The Caped Crusader and his sidekick deduce Fries’s plan after finding a list of organ transplant supplies left behind by Belson. As they make their way towards the oil rig, Barbara realizes she has been duped and escapes with the aid of Koonak, who Fries had falsely promised would keep her safe from harm.
