Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) is an American black comedy-drama film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and co-written by Nicolás Giacobone, Armando Bó, and Alexander Dinelaris Jr. The film follows the story of Riggan Thomson, a former superhero actor who is haunted by the voice of his past self as Birdman. He struggles to make a name for himself again by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway adaptation of Raymond Carver’s short story ‘What We Talk About When We Talk About Love’. Riggan’s best friend and lawyer Jake is producing the play, which also stars his girlfriend Laura and Broadway newcomer Lesley. Meanwhile, Riggan’s daughter Sam, who is recovering from drug addiction, helps him out as his assistant. As he fights to break free from his superhero persona and regain recognition as an actor, the lingering voice of Birdman continues to push him towards returning to blockbuster films.
On the day before the first preview, an unfortunate incident occurs where a light fixture falls on Riggan’s co-star Ralph. Following Lesley’s advice, Riggan decides to replace Ralph with her boyfriend, the brilliant yet volatile method actor Mike Shiner. The beginning of the previews proves to be disastrous as Mike breaks character by replacing his gin with water and even attempts to sexually assault Lesley during a scene. He also expresses dissatisfaction with the prop gun, claiming it does not look realistic enough. This constantly causes friction between Riggan and Mike, leading to a physical altercation after Riggan reads an interview in the New York Times where Mike takes credit for Riggan’s personal motivation for choosing a Raymond Carver play. Despite this conflict, Jake is able to convince Riggan to continue with the production. However, things escalate when Riggan finds Sam smoking marijuana and unleashes his frustrations on her.
