Boardwalk Empire (2010–2014) is a popular American period crime drama created by Terence Winter and aired on HBO. It takes place primarily in Atlantic City, New Jersey during the Prohibition era of the 1920s and features Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson, a notorious criminal. Winter drew inspiration from Nelson Johnson’s 2002 non-fiction book, Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City, which focuses on the real-life kingpin Enoch L. Johnson. The pilot episode was directed by Martin Scorsese and had a hefty budget of $18 million. After picking up the series for an additional 11 episodes on September 1, 2009, HBO premiered it on September 19th, 2010. The show ran for five seasons totaling 56 episodes before ending on October 26, 2014.

The federal government also takes notice of the illegal activities occurring in the area, prompting them to send investigators to look into potential mob connections and Nucky’s lavish lifestyle for a county official. The final season fast-forwards seven years to 1931, when Prohibition is coming to an end.
