In Joe Carnahan’s sci-fi action film, Boss Level (2020), Roy Pulver, a retired Delta Force soldier living in Atlanta, is trapped in a time loop. After experiencing the same events repeatedly, he has become familiar with the day’s routines and can predict when danger will strike. His day starts at 07:00 AM when he wakes up and must quickly avoid an assassin in his apartment. This is followed by an attack from a gunman in a helicopter outside his window, leading him to escape his apartment before it explodes. As the morning goes on, he successfully evades more assassins but struggles to survive an assault at 12:47 PM which always leads to him waking back up in his apartment for the next loop. On the day before Roy became caught in this loop, he had been asked by his estranged wife Jemma to come visit her at defense contractor Dynow Labs for what she claimed was a job interview.
The two engage in a heated argument about Joe, their son. Jemma has convinced him that Roy is simply a family acquaintance. However, when Dynow’s head, Colonel Clive Ventor, catches Roy at Jemma’s top-secret project, he has him removed from the premises. But before leaving, Jemma manages to collect a lock of Roy’s hair. During one cycle, Roy attempts to contact Jemma but reaches Ventor instead. The Colonel informs him that Jemma passed away in a laboratory mishap the day prior. This raises suspicions for Roy. In another loop, he discovers Joe playing hooky at Underground Atlanta to participate in a video game competition. Roy spends the day with his son but avoids mentioning Jemma’s tragic fate. As fate would have it, the assassins show up to take out Roy, and he sacrifices himself to protect Joe. In his dying breaths, he reveals his true identity as Joe’s father.
