Chain Reaction (1996)
Chain Reaction (1996) is an American science fiction action thriller film directed by Andrew Davis. While collaborating with a team from the University of Chicago to convert water into clean energy, machinist Eddie Kasalivich accidentally stumbles upon the key to their success: a sound frequency that stabilizes the process. As the team celebrates with a lab party, project leader Dr. Paul Shannon and project manager Dr. Alistair Barkley argue over the decision to share their discovery publicly or keep it within the US. Following the party, project physicist Dr. Lily Sinclair’s car fails to start, prompting Eddie to offer her a ride home by bus. Meanwhile, in the lab, Drs. Alistair and Lu Chen are preparing to upload their breakthrough to the Internet when they are attacked by intruders.
After retrieving his motorcycle from the lab, Eddie rushes back upon hearing alarms. Inside, he discovers Alistair lifeless with a plastic bag over his head and Chen missing. With the hydrogen reactor reaching a critical state, Eddie is unable to shut it down. He quickly escapes on his motorbike as a hidden detonator triggers a massive explosion that engulfs the lab and surrounding streets. Following their interrogation by the FBI, Eddie and Lily come home to disturbing news – incriminating evidence has been planted in both of their residences. Realizing they are being framed, they seek refuge at Maggie McDermott’s observatory, an old acquaintance of Eddie’s. They contact Paul for help but almost get caught in the process, narrowly escaping.
