City on a Hill (2019–2022) is an American crime drama series created by Charlie MacLean, based on a story by Ben Affleck and MacLean. The show features a talented cast including Kevin Bacon, Aldis Hodge, Amanda Clayton, Cathy Moriarty, Kevin Dunn, and Jill Hennessy. It premiered on June 7, 2019 (online) and June 16, 2019 (Showtime). Showtime later renewed the series for a second season on August 2, 2019, which aired on March 28, 2021. The third season was renewed on June 2, 2021 and debuted on July 31, 2022. However, after three seasons Showtime made the decision to cancel the show on October 27th of that year. According to review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 6.9/10 based on 37 reviews the show received a solid approval rating of 76%. Its critical consensus reads: ‘Though City on a Hill’s plot may seem rambling at times compared to its grandiose aspirations it consistently entertains viewers as Kevin Bacon and his co-stars navigate through bureaucratic obstacles’.
During the 1990s, Boston was plagued by violence including police corruption and racism. However, this all changed with what became known as the ‘Boston Miracle’. In this fictitious retelling, Assistant District Attorney Decourcy Ward arrives from Brooklyn and joins forces with a corrupt but respected FBI veteran, Jackie Rohr. Their mission is to tackle a notorious family of armored car thieves, but their efforts end up unraveling and challenging the entire criminal justice system in Boston.
