Cool World (1992) is a movie by Ralph Bakshi and written by Michael Grais and Mark Victor. World War II veteran Frank Harris returns to his mother in 1945 Las Vegas, but sadly she dies after their motorcycle ride ends in an accident. From there, Frank is transported to a cartoon-like alternate universe known as the ‘Cool World’, where he starts over as a detective for the local police force. Almost five decades later, underground cartoonist Jack Deebs is released from prison after serving ten years for killing a man he found with his wife. While incarcerated, Jack created a comic series called Cool World based on recurring dreams featuring femme fatale Holli Would. Holli longs to leave Cool World and become human, which can happen when ‘doodles’ (slang for Cool World’s inhabitants) have sex with ‘noids’ (slang for humans). However, Frank and his partner Nails, also a doodle, closely monitor Holli to prevent the two dimensions from merging.

Shortly after being released, Jack finds himself in Cool World and is taken to a nearby nightclub by Holli and her henchmen. Frank immediately confronts Jack, informing him that the existence of Cool World predates his own creation. He also cautions Jack about using writing tools, such as his fountain pen, as they can be deadly to the doodles. Additionally, Frank warns Jack to avoid any intimate encounters with Holli, as it could have dangerous consequences for both dimensions. Despite these warnings, Frank himself is in love with another doodle named Lonette and refrains from making any romantic advances. However, Jack gives into temptation and sleeps with Holli, resulting in her transformation into a noid. Taking advantage of the situation, Holli steals Jack’s pen to lure Nails before leaving with Jack for the real world.
