Coraline (2008) is an American dark fantasy horror film, animated using stop-motion and directed by Henry Selick. It is based on the novella of the same name by Neil Gaiman. The story follows a young girl named Coraline Jones as she moves from Pontiac, Michigan to the Pink Palace apartments in Ashland, Oregon. Her parents, Charlie and Mel, work from home and are often preoccupied with their urgent tasks. Along the way, Coraline encounters a black cat and Wyborne ‘Wybie’ Lovat, the grandson of her landlady. Wybie gives Coraline a ragdoll that looks just like her. This doll leads her to a small door with a brick wall behind it. One night, a jumping mouse leads Coraline back to this door which takes her to the Other World – an alternate universe where her parents have button-eyed doppelgangers who shower her with attention and food. However, she soon wakes up back in the real world. There she meets other residents of the house such as Mr. Bobinsky – an eccentric former Russian gymnast who now owns a mouse circus.

Bobinsky and Ms. Spink caution her about the Other World, while Wybie shares how his grandmother’s sister mysteriously disappeared. Despite the warnings, Coraline goes back once more. The mute Other Wybie joins her to watch the Other Bobinsky’s dancing circus mice. On another visit to the Other World, this time during the day, the cat shows up and reveals he can travel between the two worlds. He also warns Coraline about the dangers of the Other World. She then watches a performance by the Other Ms. Spink and Ms. Forcible before being offered a chance to stay permanently by the Other Mother, who demands that Coraline have buttons sewn over her eyes – an appalling request that terrifies Coraline. Despite trying to fall asleep in hopes of escaping, she remains trapped in the Other World even after waking up. When she tries to flee through a door, the Other Mother transforms into a terrifying spider-like creature and throws her through a mirror into a dark room where she is held captive.
