Criminal (2016) is an American action thriller film directed by Ariel Vromen and written by Douglas Cook and David Weisberg. The story follows the death of London-based CIA operative Billy Pope in an unsuccessful deal with hacker Jan Strook, also known as The Dutchman, for a wormhole program that provides access to nuclear codes. In order to retrieve the missing program and $10 million, Quaker Wells, Billy’s superior, enlists the help of Dr. Micah Franks to transfer Billy’s brain functions into another person. Jerico Stewart, an incarcerated criminal with unique brain structure but lacking in emotional capacity, is chosen as the test subject. The mission: to uncover The Dutchman’s location and retrieve the valuable wormhole program and missing money.
Shortly after the operation, Jerico manages to escape custody, catching Wells and Franks off guard with his unstable mental state. The surgery was only partially successful, as Billy’s thoughts are now at odds with Jerico’s. As Wells and his team embark on a mission to find both Jerico and The Dutchman, the mastermind behind the wormhole program is offering it for sale to any interested buyers, including the Russians. Overseeing everything is former tycoon Xavier Heimdahl, who was involved in both the creation of the wormhole program and Billy’s murder. Xavier’s ultimate objective is to retrieve the program for himself, which leads him to pursue Jerico and The Dutchman by any means necessary, even if it involves putting Billy’s beloved family – his wife Jill Pope and their teenage daughter Emma Pope – in danger.
