The spy film Diamonds Are Forever (1971) is the seventh installment in the James Bond series, produced by Eon Productions. It is based on Ian Fleming’s novel of the same name and was directed by Guy Hamilton, making it the second of four Bond films he directed. Agent 007, James Bond, is on a mission to capture Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who is creating look-alikes through plastic surgery. Bond eliminates one of Blofeld’s test subjects and eventually takes down the real Blofeld by drowning him in a pool of superheated mud. Meanwhile, as diamond smuggling continues, M suspects that stockpiled South African diamonds are being used to drive prices down. To get to the bottom of it all, M assigns Bond with the task of uncovering the smuggling ring. In order to blend in, Bond poses as smuggler Peter Franks and heads to Amsterdam where he meets his contact Tiffany Case.
As they journeyed, the genuine Franks suddenly appeared. Bond took care of him and assumed his identity, allowing them to travel to Los Angeles undetected with the diamonds hidden in Franks’s body. Upon arrival at the airport, Bond was pleasantly surprised to run into his ally Felix Leiter, who was posing as a customs inspector. Together, they set off for Las Vegas. At a funeral parlor connected to the smuggling network, the diamonds were surreptitiously passed on to another smuggler named Shady Tree after Franks’s cremation. However, things took a turn when the funeral director betrayed Bond and Wint and Kidd attempted to cremate him alive. Fortunately, Tree intervened upon discovering that the diamonds found in Franks’s remains were counterfeit and had been planted by Bond and the CIA. With Leiter’s help, Bond arranged for the real diamonds to be shipped.
