George A. Romero wrote and directed Diary of the Dead (2007), a found footage horror film. The movie follows a news crew as they capture an immigrant man killing his wife and son before taking his own life. The wife and son then turn into zombies, attacking and killing medical personnel and police officers, leaving only a medic and a reporter bitten before being killed themselves. Debra, the narrator, explains that most of the disturbing footage recorded by the cameraman was never aired. Meanwhile, in a different setting, students from the University of Pittsburgh’s film studies program, led by their faculty advisor Andrew Maxwell, are filming their own horror movie in the woods.
However, when word spreads about widespread violence and chaos unfolding outside their secluded location, two of the students, Ridley and Francine, decide to leave while project director Jason goes to pick up Debra (also a student) from her dorm. Unable to reach her family, they head to her parents’ home in Scranton, Pennsylvania. On their journey, Jason, Debra, Professor Maxwell, Eliot, cameraman Tony, couple Gordo and Tracy encounter a reanimated Pennsylvania State Trooper and three other zombies. After the incident, they bring Mary to a hospital where they discover that the deceased are turning into zombies. From then on, they fight for survival as they make their way to Debra’s parents’ house.
