Terence Young’s spy film, Dr. No (1962), marks the beginning of the iconic James Bond series. Following the murder of MI6 Station Chief John Strangways and his secretary Mary in Jamaica, M assigns James Bond to investigate their deaths and determine if they are linked to Strangways’ work with the CIA. Bond faces danger right away when an enemy agent posing as a chauffeur attempts to kill him upon his arrival in Jamaica. Though Bond manages to turn the tables, the agent kills himself before he can be interrogated. Seeking answers, Bond meets with government officials, including principal secretary Pleydell Smith and witnesses who saw Strangways last, such as Professor Dent.
After arriving at Strangways’ house, Bond discovers a receipt from Dent and a photo of Strangways and Quarrel, the same man who had followed him from the airport earlier. It turns out that Quarrel is actually working for the CIA, and he introduces Bond to their agent Felix Leiter, who is also investigating Strangways’ death. Felix informs Bond that they were able to track the radio jamming signal to Jamaica (a former British colony), and that Strangways had been assisting in identifying its source. Quarrel then reveals that before Strangways’ demise, he and Strangways had gathered mineral samples from an island called Crab Key, which is off-limits to civilians. Suspecting something amiss, Bond pays a visit to Dent and questions him about the samples and Crab Key. However, he becomes skeptical of Dent’s answers when he claims that everything checked out normally.
