Fair Game (2010) is a biographical political drama film directed by Doug Liman and starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn. Valerie Plame, employed by the Central Intelligence Agency, keeps her job secret from everyone outside of her husband and parents. She is an intelligence officer involved in numerous sensitive and potentially hazardous undercover operations abroad. Her husband, Joseph C. Wilson, formerly served as the U.S. ambassador to Gabon with a previous diplomatic history in Niger. Plame’s colleagues at the CIA ask Wilson to travel to Niger to gather information about potential yellowcake uranium procurement by Iraq for nuclear weapons. After careful investigation, Wilson concludes it is not happening.

However, President George W. Bush later mentions this uranium in his 2003 State of the Union speech as part of his justification for military action, which prompts Wilson to submit an article to The New York Times refuting these false claims. Plame’s identity as a CIA operative is later exposed by the media, potentially originating from individuals within the White House such as Vice President Cheney’s chief of staff and national security adviser, Scooter Libby. This revelation may have been intended to damage the credibility of her husband, who had publicly accused the Bush administration of using faulty intelligence to justify the Iraq War. As a result, Plame is quickly terminated from her position with the agency, causing disruption to several sensitive operations and causing strain in her marriage.
