Firefox (1982)
Clint Eastwood produced, directed, and starred in Firefox (1982), an American action techno-thriller film. Based on Craig Thomas’ novel of the same name, it follows a joint British-American mission to steal a highly advanced Soviet aircraft known as ‘Firefox’. Capable of hypersonic flight and equipped with thought-controlled weapons, this MiG-31 (NATO code name) is also invisible to radar. Mitchell Gant, a former Vietnam veteran and prisoner of war who can speak Russian due to his mother’s heritage, leads the infiltration aided by dissidents within the Soviet Union. Three scientists working on the fighter are crucial in achieving his goal: to steal and bring back the Firefox for analysis in friendly territory.
The KGB is aware of the plan and actively searching for Gant. With the help of dissidents, Gant stays one step ahead of the KGB and reaches the Bilyarsk air base. This is where the Firefox prototype, heavily guarded, is located. The dissidents assist Gant in infiltrating the base. Pyotr Baranovich, one of the scientists, briefs Gant on how to operate the aircraft but cautions him that there is a second prototype in another hangar that must be destroyed. As a diversion, Gant knocks out Lt. Colonel Yuri Voskov, who was chosen by the Soviets to fly the first prototype during a visit from their First Secretary. Meanwhile, a disruptive explosion caused by the scientists creates chaos on the base but fails to damage the second prototype.
