Free Fire (2016)
Free Fire (2016) is a British black comedy-action film directed by Ben Wheatley, with a screenplay co-written by Wheatley and Amy Jump. On a chilly night in 1978, while en route to meet IRA members Chris and Frank, Stevo confides in Bernie that he was attacked the previous day by the cousin of a woman he had assaulted. When they arrive at a Boston warehouse, Justine acts as their intermediary and they are welcomed inside by Ord, the group’s representative. Vernon and his associates – Martin, Harry, and Gordon – are the arms dealers who have arranged to sell them guns. Despite initial tensions between the two groups and an error made by Vernon in providing incorrect rifles, the weapons are eventually unloaded from a van and Chris’ group hands over their payment in a briefcase.
In the midst of this exchange, Stevo recognizes Harry as his assailant from the day before and refuses to go near him which agitates Frank. After a heated confrontation between Harry and Stevo, tensions between their respective groups escalate. Stevo initially appears to apologize, but then boasts about his actions towards Harry’s cousin. This incenses Harry, who retaliates by shooting Stevo in the shoulder. The two sides break off and exchange gunfire. In the midst of the chaos, Martin is hit in the head by a stray bullet while holding the briefcase. As he falls to the ground, the case is left unattended, prompting Vernon to urge his men to retrieve it. In an attempt to flee, Bernie is shot by Vernon and dies shortly after. Suddenly, two armed hit-men join in on the shooting from a distance. One of them, Jimmy, is killed and the other is identified as Howie by Ord.
