The mastermind behind this scheme is Czechoslovak chess grandmaster Kronsteen and SPECTRE operative Rosa Klebb is appointed to oversee the mission. She enlists the help of cipher clerk Tatiana Romanova from the consulate by deceiving her into thinking that Klebb still works for SMERSH, the Soviet counter-intelligence agency. To carry out the assassination plot, Klebb also relies on trained killer Donald Grant at just the right moment.
In London, Bond is summoned by M to a meeting and learns that Tatiana has requested his assistance in defecting to the West. In exchange for providing British intelligence with a Lektor, exactly as Kronsteen predicted, M suspects it may be a trap but decides to honor Tatiana’s plea. Prior to his departure, Q Branch equips Bond with a specialized briefcase containing various defensive gadgets and an ArmaLite AR-7 sniper rifle to aid him on his mission. Upon arriving in Istanbul, Bond collaborates with Ali Kerim Bey, the head of MI6’s branch in the city while waiting for updates from Tatiana. To protect him until he can seize the Lektor, Grant is shadowing Bond. During this period, Krilencu, a Soviet agent, attacks Kerim and attempts to flee the city. With Bond’s help, Kerim successfully eliminates Krilencu after taking refuge at a gypsy settlement and surviving an assault from enemy forces.
