Hancock (2008), a satirical superhero film directed by Peter Berg and written by Vince Gilligan and Vy Vincent Ngo, follows the story of an alcoholic, reckless superhuman named John Hancock. Gifted with flight, invulnerability, and super-strength, Hancock operates as a haphazard and unrefined superhero in Los Angeles. However, his drunken and careless crime-fighting methods, as well as his rude and unpleasant demeanor, often lead to public ridicule and hate. One day, while causing unnecessary destruction during a rescue mission for public relations specialist Ray Embrey, Hancock ends up saving Ray from an oncoming train, which he derails in the process. Grateful for the save and seeing an opportunity to boost his career, Ray offers to help improve Hancock’s tarnished public image. As Hancock gets to know Ray’s family – including his skeptical wife Mary and son Aaron – Ray suggests that Hancock apologize publicly for his actions and spend some time in prison until Los Angeles is ready for him.

Though hesitant at first, Hancock ultimately agrees to the plan but struggles to fit in behind bars. After placing two other prisoners behind bars, Hancock is faced with retaliation from his fellow inmates. In order to protect himself, he resorts to physical violence. Shortly after, Ray pays him a visit and urges him to remain composed. However, upon learning of the possibility of serving eight years in prison, Hancock becomes overwhelmed with anxiety and attempts to make a run for it. Thankfully, Ray is able to calm him down and convince him to stick to their original plan. Later on, Mary and Aaron pay him a visit and bring along homemade spaghetti with meatballs. As crime rates in Los Angeles continue to soar, Hancock is eventually released from prison to assist in tackling the issue.
