Hilda and the Mountain King (2021)

Hilda and the Mountain King (2021) is an animated adventure fantasy film directed by Andy Coyle and written by Luke Pearson. It is based on the sixth edition of the Hilda graphic novel series, also titled The Mountain King. This film serves as a continuation of the second-season finale of the Hilda animated series, The Stone Forest, where we see Hilda, now transformed into a troll, flee from Trylla. Unfortunately, her journey outside of the forest results in her being turned to stone by sunlight. Meanwhile, back in Trolberg, Johanna discovers Baba occupying Hilda’s usual spot and with the help of Tontu’s deduction skills, they realize that Hilda has been affected by a changeling spell. Determined to find her, Johanna joins forces with Baba, Tontu, Alfur and Twig to embark on a search for Hilda. However, their efforts are met with challenges as they struggle to locate an entrance into the Stone Forest.

At another location, Erik Ahlberg holds a press conference declaring a curfew due to the growing troll presence outside of Trolberg. While watching, David’s mom becomes interested in a volunteer opportunity with the Trolberg Safety Patrol. Later on, students at Edmund Ahlberg Elementary School are shown a safety video about trolls, but Frida and David voice their disapproval of its inaccurate information. As evening falls and Hilda remains missing, Johanna encounters a group of Safety Patrol officers and reluctantly heads back home. As the sun sets, Hilda breaks free from her petrified state but faces an obstacle in returning to Trolberg due to the numerous belltowers. She wanders off and discovers a vast cave filled with dozens of hanging bells at its entrance.
