An animated film Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom (2016) is based on a graphic novel that draws inspiration from the writings of American horror author H. P. Lovecraft. Young Howard embarks on an adventure when he visits his father, Winfield Lovecraft, at Butler Sanitarium with his mother. Unfortunately, Winfield has been driven insane by something he regrets writing and begs Howard to destroy the book. Although Howard remains composed during this disturbing incident, he leaves with a paper star gift from his father. However, once at home, his curiosity gets the better of him and he delves into the dark world of magic and deceit described in the book. Within its pages lies R’yleh, a terrifying kingdom described as a twisted combination of fairy tales and nightmares. While innocently reading a few words in a strange language, Howard unintentionally gets sucked into another dimension through a hole in the fabric of space-time. There, he encounters Thu Thu Hmong, a Deep One who initially plans to eat him but changes his tune after Howard saves his life.

Unable to correctly pronounce the creature’s name, Howard easily resorts to calling him Spot. From then on, the young Lovecraft is thrust into a captivating new world. Together with Spot by his side, Howard meets local children by the names of Felch, Davik, Tw’i and Nes. These four become his trusted guides as he begins his journey through the Kingdom of R’yleh. Eventually arriving at the Frozen Castle, Howard and Spot are greeted by Algid Bunk – the Earl serving under King Alzhared. With Algid as their mentor, they must uncover the secrets hidden within R’yleh in order for Howard to reunite with his family back home.
