Howard Lovecraft and the Kingdom of Madness (2018), a Canadian animated film from 2018, is the third and final installment in the series. Written, directed, and produced by Sean Patrick O’Reilly, it follows the 2016 and 2017 films Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom and Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom. At SDCC ’18, Shout! Factory revealed their upcoming titles, including Howard Lovecraft and the Kingdom of Madness. This series is based on a graphic novel by Bruce Brown. In an interview with WIRED, Brown mentioned that he drew inspiration from American horror author H. P. Lovecraft’s writings for characters and settings. The third film in this trilogy features Cthulhu, as hinted in its predecessors.
Following his adventures in the Frozen and Undersea Kingdoms, young Howard has returned to the safety of his home. However, their world is now at risk as the walls between realities grow weaker, leaving them vulnerable to outside threats. Howard joins forces with his father, Uncle Randolph, and Dr. Henry Armitage on a journey to Antarctica in order to prevent the awakening of Cthulhu, the harbinger of destruction.
