In Dreams (1999), a psychological thriller directed by Neil Jordan, is an adaptation of the novel Doll’s Eyes (1993) by Bari Wood. As a suburban housewife and mother, Claire Cooper spends her free time illustrating children’s stories while her husband Paul, an airline pilot, is often away for work (and possibly having an affair with his Australian co-worker). This leaves Claire to care for their daughter Rebecca, who is eight years old. Strange and hazy dreams ensue for Claire involving an underwater city and the murder of a young girl. Tragedy strikes when Rebecca disappears during a school play and is later found deceased at the bottom of a reservoir.
Despite her long-held belief that her dreams could predict the future, Claire finds herself facing opposition as she tries to participate in the police investigation. As her visions continue to grow in vividness, she becomes convinced that they are revealing the actions of her daughter’s killer, a notorious serial murderer known as Vivian Thompson. Through her dreams, Claire discovers that the submerged city she has been seeing is actually an old town called Northfield, which was flooded when a reservoir was built. Tormented by these relentless visions, Claire turns to Dr. Silverman for assistance only to be diagnosed with psychosis.
