Inside Out (2015)

A Pixar film, Inside Out (2015), tells the story of a young girl named Riley and her core emotions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger. Each night, Riley’s experiences turn into colored orbs that shape her long-term memories. These memories create five floating islands that represent her most important ‘core memories’. Joy is the leader of the emotions and strives to keep Sadness in check. However, she sees Fear, Disgust, and Anger as necessary parts of Riley’s life while viewing Sadness as a negative influence. At 11 years old, Riley moves from Minnesota to San Francisco due to her father’s job transfer. The move does not go smoothly; their new house is small and old, her father is always busy with work, the local pizza parlor only serves broccoli-topped pizza (which she dislikes), and their moving van was mistakenly sent to Texas and won’t arrive for weeks.

On Riley’s first day at her new school, Sadness sadly changes her happy memories, causing Riley to cry in front of her classmates and creating a sad core memory. In an attempt to get rid of this memory, Joy accidentally removes the other core memories while struggling with Sadness, resulting in the personality islands malfunctioning. As a result, Joy, Sadness, and the core memories are all sucked out of Headquarters. Without their two primary emotions, Anger, Fear, and Disgust take over for Riley; they try to create positive core memories but ultimately fail, leading to a rift between Riley and those she cares about. Without the core memories, Riley’s personality islands gradually collapse and vanish into the “Memory Dump”, where they disappear forever. Determined to bring back Riley’s happiness, Anger decides to escape to Minnesota.
