In the film John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad, John finds his stolen Ford Mustang in the hands of Abram Tarasov, brother of Viggo who was killed in the first film. He goes on a violent rampage against Tarasov’s men, causing significant damage to his car. However, he spares Tarasov and returns home. John then takes his Mustang to be repaired by chop-shop owner Aurelio. Later on, he is visited by Santino D’Antonio, a crime boss from the Camorra who reminds him of the ‘impossible task’ that John completed for him in the past. As a result, John had to make an unbreakable vow or ‘marker’, represented by a blood oath medallion. When Santino demands services from John, he refuses, leading Santino to retaliate by using a grenade launcher to destroy his house. Despite surviving this attack, John heads to New York City’s Continental Hotel where Winston reminds him of the underworld’s two unbreakable rules: no killing on Continental grounds and honoring every marker.
Later that evening, John receives a visit from Santino D’Antonio, yet another assassin. He brings with him a marker that John had given him in exchange for completing a job that allowed John to leave his previous life behind. This marker represents a binding oath for John to fulfill any task requested by Santino. Despite being aware of the consequences, John refuses to assist Santino. In retaliation, Santino destroys John’s home using an ARWEN 37 (acting as a grenade launcher). Fortunately, both John and his dog are able to escape unharmed. Seeking guidance, John turns to Winston at the Continental hotel to discuss the situation and the significance of the marker. Winston is unable to intervene, as John is bound by the oath and refusing it puts his life in danger. Leaving his dog in the care of Charon, the concierge at the hotel, John sets out to find Santino and ultimately agrees to complete one task for him.
