Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) is an American stop-motion animated action fantasy film produced by Laika. The story takes place in feudal Japan, where a 12-year-old boy named Kubo lives with his ill mother in a mountain cave near a village. Despite having lost an eye, Kubo uses his magical abilities and plays the shamisen to make origami for the villagers. Through his performances, he shares the tale of his missing father Hanzo, a samurai warrior. However, Kubo is never able to complete the story as he doesn’t know what happened to his father and his mother’s deteriorating mental state prevents her from remembering the ending. She also warns him not to be out after dark as her sisters Karasu and Washi, as well as their grandfather- the Moon King who took Kubo’s eye when he was a baby- may find him and take his other eye.

Kubo discovers the village’s Bon festival, where they can communicate with their departed loved ones. However, despite attending, he is disappointed when Hanzo fails to appear from his lantern. As a result, he stays too long and misses the return home before sunset. Kubo becomes a target for Karasu and Washi’s attack, but his mother unexpectedly shows up and uses her powers to send him away with a mission to find his father’s armor. When he awakens in a distant land, Kubo finds that his wooden snow monkey charm has transformed into a living creature named Monkey. She informs him that his mother is no longer with them and their village has been destroyed. With the guidance of ‘Little Hanzo’, an origami figure resembling Kubo’s father, they embark on a journey to locate the armor. Along the way, they encounter Beetle, who suffers from amnesia and believes himself to be Hanzo’s apprentice while being cursed as a stag beetle/human hybrid.
