Richard Donner directed the American buddy cop action comedy film, Lethal Weapon 2 (1989). Two years after the first film, LAPD sergeants Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh chase unknown drug suspects and discover they were actually transporting a shipment of illegal gold Krugerrand coins from the South African government under apartheid. Following this, consul-general Arjen Rudd and security agent Pieter Vorstedt eliminate Hans, who had lost the Krugerrands, and consider ways to divert police attention from their activities. Pieter suggests deterring Murtaugh from pursuing the case and proceeds to invade his home. As a result, Captain Murphy assigns Riggs and Murtaugh to protect a pesky federal witness named Leo Getz.
As the events unfold, it becomes apparent that the two cases are intertwined. After an attack is made on Leo’s life, Riggs and Murtaugh uncover his dubious past involving illegal money laundering for vengeful drug traffickers. Leo shares with them valuable insights on the mechanics of money laundering and leads them to the criminals, but their attempt to apprehend them is thwarted by Rudd, who claims diplomatic immunity on behalf of his corrupt acquaintances. Despite being ordered to back off from the case, Riggs makes a bold move by persistently harassing the South African consulate and even becoming romantically involved with Rudd’s assistant, Rika van den Haas, a progressive Afrikaner who holds disdain towards her boss and his discriminatory beliefs.
