The American buddy cop action film, Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), was directed and produced by Richard Donner. Pregnant LAPD Sergeant Martin Riggs and his partner Lorna Cole were not married, but the idea had crossed their minds. Meanwhile, the daughter of Riggs’ fellow sergeant Roger Murtaugh, Rianne, was also expecting a child. Due to issues with their department’s insurance carrier regarding their behavior as sergeants, Police Chief Murphy promotes them to captains. Along with Leo Getz, they stumble upon a Chinese immigrant smuggling ring after accidentally grounding an oceangoing vessel. Unfortunately, the boat’s captain manages to escape. In their investigation, Murtaugh discovers the Hong family hiding from US Immigration officers in fear of being deported. Without hesitation, he offers them refuge in his own home where they quickly form bonds with Riggs and Cole. Grandfather Hong reveals that they are searching for his skilled engraver uncle who funded their journey to America.
After learning from Lorna that Detective Lee Butters is the father of Rianne’s unborn child, Riggs and the family keep this knowledge hidden from Murtaugh, who would disapprove of his daughter being involved with a police officer. As their investigation into the smuggling ring continues, they track down ‘Uncle’ Benny Chan, a notorious crime boss operating out of a Chinatown restaurant. There, they encounter Wah Sing Ku, a high-ranking Triad negotiator. When Chan refuses to cooperate and kicks them out without probable cause, Riggs resorts to pulling the fire alarm to disperse the customers and create chaos. Despite his attempts to apprehend him, the ship captain escapes, only to be later killed by Ku for attracting unwanted attention from the police. In order to protect their plans, Chan and Ku take measures to eliminate anyone who could potentially expose them.
