Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), an Australian action film directed by George Miller and George Ogilvie with a screenplay by Miller and Terry Hayes, is set in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by ecocide and nuclear war. In this barren landscape, Max Rockatansky is traveling through the desert pulled by camels. However, his journey is interrupted when he is attacked by Jedediah, an airborne bandit, and his son who steal his vehicle. Determined to get it back, Max tracks them to a trading post known as ‘Bartertown’. Despite initially being denied entry due to not having anything to trade, Max impresses the town’s officials with his toughness. The founder and ruler of Bartertown, Aunty Entity, offers to resupply him in exchange for completing a task.
She explains that the town’s main source of energy comes from a subterranean refinery called ‘Underworld’, which converts pig feces into methane. The refinery is overseen by a clever dwarf named Master, who rides on his giant bodyguard, Blaster. Known as ‘Master Blaster’, he has started to challenge Aunty for dominion over Bartertown. Aunty has asked Max to eliminate Blaster, so she can manipulate Master more easily. Max enters the Underworld to assess Master Blaster’s strength and befriends a man named Pig Killer, who was sent there for killing a pig to feed his family. When Master Blaster discovers that Max’s newly acquired vehicle was previously owned by him, he forces Max to disable a trap. In the process, Max sets off an alarm and learns that high-pitched sounds greatly affect Blaster.
