The superhero film Man of Steel (2013) is based on the DC Comics character Superman. The planet Krypton is in turmoil due to the mining of its core. In a desperate attempt to save their race, Krypton’s leading scientist, Jor-El, infuses the genetics codex into his newborn son, Kal-El – the first naturally born Kryptonian in centuries. Tragically, Jor-El is killed by General Zod during a coup. Kal-El is sent to Earth and adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Kansas, where he goes by the name Clark. As he grows up, his Kryptonian biology and exposure to Earth’s sun give him extraordinary powers that Jonathan urges him to keep secret. However, when Clark loses his father during a tornado storm, he feels responsible and travels around the world under different identities searching for purpose while carrying the weight of guilt.
Lois Lane, a reporter for the Daily Planet, is tasked with investigating the discovery of a Kryptonian scout ship in the Arctic. Disguised as a worker, Clark gains access to the ship and learns about his true origins from its artificial intelligence, which has been modeled after his father Jor-El. As Lois tails Clark, she accidentally sets off the ship’s security system and he must use his powers to rescue her from its defenses. Donning a uniform provided by the AI, Clark begins testing out his extraordinary abilities. Despite his efforts, Perry White remains unconvinced and refuses to publish an article on the incident. Determined to expose Clark’s secret identity, Lois tracks him down in Smallville. However, upon learning of Jonathan Kent’s selfless sacrifice, she decides not to run the story in order to protect Clark while also fueling Perry’s suspicions.
